Cicero in Letters analyzes letter-writing habits and political preoccupations that define the correspondence between Cicero and his contemporaries during a period of crisis at the end of the Roman Republic. Most of Cicero's letters were written in ink on paper or parchment with a reed pen; a few on tablets of wood or ivory covered with wax, the marks being cut with a stylus. The earlier letters he wrote with his own hand, the later were, except in rare cases, dictated to a secretary. These letters, which Cicero wrote to his friend Atticus, brought to light elements of Cicero's private or "human" character as compared to his public persona that had been lost in the Middle Ages since the 12th century.

Cicero letters

One of Rome's most memorable and keenly observant writers, his letters to friends and family are an astonishingly detailed record of daily life and politics in Rome. 2019-02-26 This collection encompasses Cicero’s correspondence with his family, friends, and acquaintances, spanning from the peak of his political career to the years leading up to his death. The letters provide an authentic portrait of Cicero, reflecting both his private and public life. Much of his correspondence was written in the moment—the writing style casual and the content personal. In letters to his friend Atticus, Cicero (106-43 BCE) reveals himself as to no other of his correspondents except, perhaps, his brother, and vividly depicts a momentous period in Roman history, marked by the rise of Julius Caesar and the downfall of the Republic.

It traces the portraits of immorality that Cicero made of his political and forensic enemies to him include among others speeches, progymnasmata, and letters.

Edition Notes Latin text, English introduction and notes. Series Classical In letters to his friend Atticus, Cicero (106-43 BCE) reveals himself as to no other of his correspondents except, perhaps, his brother, and vividly depicts a momentous period in Roman history, marked by the rise of Julius Caesar and the downfall of the Republic. Cicero is in more somber mood here in his letters to fellow Pompeiians, and many letters follow the tradition of consolation letters as if grieving someone's death. I think it's interesting that although he mourns the current situation, he yet blames it on general condition of war and Caesar's followers rather than the man himself, which is to come later. Cicero wrote many books on rhetoric, philosophy, and politics as well as hundreds of letters and orations and even quite a bit of poetry. Cicero was no ivory tower scholar. It should be noted that this type of correspondence was the most public that Cicero produced.
